November is…

National Novel Writing Month

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 p.m. on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought fleetingly about writing a novel.

National Homeless Youth Awareness Month

It is hard to think of someone your age as being homeless.  The fact is that homelessness is a real problem, even in our own community.  If you or someone you know is in need of help there are many resources available to you including Iowa Homeless Youth Centers (IHYC).  IHYC works to eliminate homelessness among children, youth and young mothers in Polk County.

Movember encourages men to grow a mustache during November to raise awareness of male related cancers. From the site, “through the power of the Mo, vital funds and awareness are raised to combat (men’s) …cancer and mental health challenges.” Girls can get involved too!

Vegan Month

Vegan Month starts with World Vegan Day on November 1 to celebrate the founding of the world’s first Vegan Society 1944.  The word ‘vegan’ was chosen founder by Donald Watson and his ‘non-dairy vegetarians’ to describe their diet.  Sponsored by The Vegan Society.

Reggie’s Sleepout – November 16th, Drake University Stadium

Last year nearly 1,500 youth in Polk County had no place to call home.  Reggie’s Sleepout, sponsored by the Iowa Homeless Youth Centers, is named for Reggie Kelsey, a young man who aged out of the foster care system and three months later with no resources to turn to, was found dead in the Des Moines river.  The funds raised from Reggie’s Sleepout are used for programs which help homeless youth transition to a life as a successful and productive member of their community.

World Toilet Day – November 19

Yes, that’s right. World Toilet Day.  There’s actually a good cause behind this oddball day: it’s a reminder that there are billions of people who do not have access to toilets (and other necessary sanitation).  There are lots of ways to celebrate and help!

National Adoption Day – November 23

National Adoption Day is an effort to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting for permanent, loving families.  Part of National Adoption Month.
