West Des Moines WRITES:  A community poetry contest and reading

The West Des Moines Library is hosting a community poetry contest culminating in a reading event to celebrate Poetry Month and National Library Week. We invite everyone to submit poetry entries to the library through February 28. Winners will be invited to share their work at the library during a live reading event on April 11. This year’s contest is offered in collaboration with the 2018-2019 West Des Moines Community Reads project featuring Laurie Halse Anderson.

Contest rules:

  • The contest is open to all ages and entries will be judged in the following brackets:
    • Grades K-3
    • Grades 4-6
    • Grades 7-8
    • Grade 9
    • Grades 10-12
    • Adult
  • Entries are limited to one (1) per person.
  • Entries must include the following information:
    • Name, Email address or Phone
    • Judging bracket School & grade (for students)
  • Entries must be original and in English.
  • Entries will not be returned to authors.
  • Participants may drop off their entry to the West Des Moines Library in person or email it to youthservices@wdm.iowa.gov.
  • Entry deadline is February 28, 2019.
  • Winners will be announced March 25, 2019.
  • All winners will be invited to read their work at the WDM Community Writes poetry reading event on April 11, 2019 from 6:30-7:30PM. (On our Calendar)
  • Winning entries will be published on the WDM Library website.
  • Prizes for this year’s event will feature books written by Laurie Halse Anderson, sponsored by the West Des Moines Rotary Club.
  • Winners will be invited to have a book signed by Laurie Halse Anderson during her visit on April 24.
