New Meet Your Neighbors Story Boxes Available for Multicultural Children’s Book Day

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA – In celebration of Multicultural Children’s Book Day and the West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) district community, Meet Your Neighbors Story Boxes full of books, music, activities and new perspectives are available starting Jan. 31, 2020.

Created in partnership between WDMCS Community Education and the West Des Moines Public Library, Meet Your Neighbors Story Boxes are a new community resource for children in preschool through grade 3 that can foster understanding across difference and help us be good neighbors to all who make the West Des Moines area their home.

“Stories open windows to the world and can help us see how our lives are connected to others across the globe,” said Caryn Kelly, WDMCS Community Education intercultural outreach coordinator. “The Meet Your Neighbors Story Boxes invite us to explore from a child’s point of view and to connect with our neighbors both near and far.”

Each Story Box focuses on a different geographical region and includes books, music, and a guide to encourage readers to make connections to themselves and our WDMCS neighbors. WDMCS Community Education will provide online expansion activities and resources to be explored, and the library will offer curated book lists with activity guides for older children.

Reserve a Story Box now, or check one out from the West Des Moines Public Library.
