So we put out a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) in March.  We wanted to update some information, based on new regulations from the State.

In order to protect public health and following recommendations from the State, the WDM Library will be closed until at least the end of April.  We are working on plans for reopening in early May IF, and only if, we can do so safely for both patrons and staff.

Here are answers to some other questions you may have:

Q. I have library materials checked out. Can I still return them?

A. Yes, the book drop remains open. Returned materials will be checked in and shelved, with staff following Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) safety guidelines for sanitizing library materials.  When we re-open, this may mean short delays before materials are available for checkout.

Q. What if the State of Iowa or local authorities issue a “Shelter in Place” order?

A. In such a case, the book drop will be closed and locked and we will announce this widely.  Any patron leaving materials at the library site in that case would be billed for any damage that occurs to the materials.  So far, this has not happened, so you may continue to return items as you’re finished with them.

Q. I have holds on library materials. Will they still be there when this current crisis ends?

A. Maybe, depending on when the hold was placed and if it came from another library.

Anyone who has materials sitting on the hold shelf now will get a fresh reminder just before we re-open, letting them know they can retrieve and check out their holds – you will have a few days to do this.

Items borrowed from other libraries via Mobius and other interlibrary loan sources may not be available upon re-open, depending on our loan agreement – check your account or give us a call at that time.

Q. When will on-site library programming continue?

A. It will take some time after the Iowa Department of Public Health gives the “all clear” for us to get back into full operational shape again. We expect programming to continue roughly two weeks after the library is allowed to re-open to the public.

Q. Can I put in requests for interlibrary loans or book club kits?

A. No book club kits or interlibrary loans are being processed or shipped during the closing, but you can submit a request through the website here:

Book Club Kits:   We will process and distribute book club materials normally upon our re-opening.  Keep in mind we may have to wait for kits to be returned that were loaned before our closure.

Interlibrary Loan:  These will auto-forward to the selector in that area – ILLs will be processed upon re-opening, since most of these systems are currently shut down and no deliveries are being made.

You can also request NEW Materials through that form –  new items are being ordered while we are closed and will be processed after re-open.

Q. How do I get in touch with the library during the closing?

A. We are staffing our reference phone line (515-222-3403 OR 515-222-3400 option 4) Mon-Fri from 10a-2p (note new time frame as of 4/14) and will try to help patrons navigate our online and electronic resources, reset PINs, etc. as we are available.  We will also be monitoring two main email addresses: and
