Just now, staff handed me a note from a patron in which she tells us that she had some trouble finding our new 24-hour self-service library kiosk once she got to Valley Junction.

We want to make it easier for our patrons to find, so here’s a map:

To get to the kiosk, turn off of 4th Street into the parking lot behind the West Des Moines Community Center (217 5th Street is its official address); you’ll see the machine just to the south of the rear entrance. It looks like this:

GPS Coordinates: 41.5717378, -93.7088021

Users must have a West Des Moines Public Library card in good standing to check out one of the 235 carefully selected books and DVDs in the kiosk and there is a borrowing limit of ten items per cardholder. Library cards are free, but to get one, one must visit the main library at 4000 Mills Civic Parkway and fill out a form (and show proof of identification and residence.)

In addition to checking out, patrons can renew and return library materials at the kiosk, whether borrowed from the kiosk or main library. There are some size limitations on items because of the dimensions of the return slot, but most library items will fit.

The kiosk, the first of its kind in Iowa, results from a generous gift of over $100,000 from the West Des Moines Library Friends Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises money to support the library’s services and programs.

Contact library director Darryl Eschete at 515-222-3409 with questions or concerns about the kiosk.
