Updates as of 11/25/2020:

  • Today the Library Board decided to continue curbside service only through December 23 and will reassess the situation at the regular Board meeting in December.
  • NEW: we have put a bunch of new STEM kits into circulation! You can view the entire list here.
  • We’ve been hearing some requests for pre-selected book bundles. If that is something you’d be interested in, could you please send an email to youthservices@wdm.iowa.gov and let us know what you would want to see made available in a book bundle? We always want to provide the very best service to our community. Thanks!
  • The library will be closing at 5PM tonight and remain fully closed on Thursday and Friday. We will reopen for curbside services on Saturday at 10:00AM.

Take care, everyone! We miss seeing you all and hope you are staying safe and healthy.

Original post:

By now you might have heard that the WDM Library is going to stay closed and continue curbside service only through November 30 because of the high COVID numbers in our community. I know–we’re sad too! Your Youth Services Team misses having you in the building for book recommendations, storytimes, playing with toys…#2020istheworst.

But while we are closed we are working really hard behind the scenes to keep supporting our kids and families. Here are some ways that the library can help:

  1. First and foremost, curbside service is still available during this closure. We’ll bring out your materials right to your car from 9AM-7PM Monday – Thursday and 10AM-2PM Friday – Saturday.
  2. We LOVE (lovelovelovelove) to give book recommendations. It is our favorite! There are several ways you can chat with us about books, including using this personalized reading recommendations form. When you submit this form, you will hear back from a library staff member with some specific title ideas and also how to place them on hold. With this form, we can provide both in-print and digital resources, and it is for all ages! You can also call the Youth Services Desk at 515-222-3405 during library hours (9-7 Monday – Thursday, 10-2 Friday – Saturday) and speak with a member of our team. Another way to receive immediate suggestions is to search “Staff Picks” on our library catalog. You’ll find a bunch of lists curated by our team, including Alphabet Books, Historical Fiction, 100 Books Before Kindergarten, Graphic Novels, and more.
  3. Virtual storytimes are not as much fun as live storytimes but we still love to share books and reading with young listeners. You can find our full schedule of virtual events on our online calendar. If you have suggestions for programs, we are all ears! Give us a call (515-222-3405) or email youthservices@wdm.iowa.gov.
  4. We have put our puzzles and STEM kits back into circulation to support at-home learning. You can put these items on hold via our catalog. We are also purchasing new items for these collections, so keep your eyes out for fun new things!
  5. Our team is available to connect with classrooms for virtual stories, book talks, and training on use of ebooks. If you are a teacher, we are here to support you!
  6. Winter Reading 2021 will launch on January 1, so watch our website and social media for updates as we get closer to that date.
