Changes to WDM Overdrive/Libby Services - Effective May 31, 2025

UPDATE: The changes will now take affect on May 31, 2025 to allow our patrons an ample amount of time to switch their cards in Libby/ OverDrive. Please reach out to our Library Technology Coordinator, Louise Alcorn, to switch your card.

Starting May 31, 2025, we’re making an important update to our digital collection access through OverDrive and Libby. Below, you’ll find a quick overview of what’s changing and why, along with answers to common questions to help guide you through the transition.

What’s changing with OverDrive and Libby access?
Beginning May 31, 2025, only West Des Moines Library cardholders who reside in West Des Moines or our contracted city of Cumming will have access to our OverDrive and Libby collections.

Why is this change happening?
There are three key reasons behind this decision:

  1. Contract Requirements: Our agreement with OverDrive specifies that access must be limited to residents of our city and contracted areas.

  2. Rising Costs: Digital publishing and service expenses continue to increase, and we need to stay within our budget to continue offering great resources.

  3. Regional Consistency: This update aligns our practices with those of other metro libraries in the area.

I live in West Des Moines or Cumming. What is changing for me?

Nothing! You'll have the same access to OverDrive and Libby that you've always had.

I DON'T live in West Des Moines or Cumming. What can I do?

You can still use your home library (the library in the city where you live), which will offer the broadest range of services for your area. Many metro libraries, including ours, participate in the OverDrive Bridges Consortium, so there's a good chance you’ll still have access to OverDrive and Libby through your home library’s subscription.

Can I transfer my OverDrive account or holds to a different library card?
Absolutely! If you need assistance transferring your account or managing your digital holds, we’re here to help. We’ll connect you with our Library Technology Coordinator, Louise Alcorn, for one-on-one support.

Can I still use other WDM Library services if I’m not eligible for OverDrive access?
Yes! Even if you’re not eligible for our digital collections, you’re still welcome to enjoy our physical materials, library spaces, and programs. We’d love to continue seeing you in the library and helping you in any way we can.

We understand this may be an unexpected or disappointing update for some patrons, and we appreciate your understanding as we work to manage resources responsibly. If you have questions or would like to speak more about this change, please don’t hesitate to reach out directly to Traci Glass, Director of the West Des Moines Public Library.
