Vega Discover Q&A: How do I use it?

Q: What is Vega Discover?
A: Vega Discover is the library’s new, more user-friendly catalog interface. It replaces our Encore catalog and makes finding, browsing, and requesting materials easier. Check out some other Iowa libraries that are using Vega Discover to get a feel for what ours will look like! Try Ames Public Library or Cedar Rapids Public Library. Our new catalog will launch on December 12, 2025.

Q: Why is the library switching to Vega Discover?
A: Vega Discover is designed to make your library experience easier and more intuitive. It’s simple to learn and use, with clear, organized information that helps you find what you need quickly. Different formats of the same title such as print, ebook, and audiobook are displayed together, so you can easily see all available options at a glance. Below is an example of what the new "roll-up" layout will look like in our catalog.

As you browse, you’ll also see related titles by topic or author, encouraging discovery of new favorites. Optimized for tablets and smartphones, Vega Discover works seamlessly on any device, and best of all, you can check out or request digital content with a single click- no more jumping between Libby and the catalog!

Q: What will change about my library account?

A: Not much will change! One item that will change when we make the transition over to our new system is that all PIN numbers will change to the last four digits of your phone number we have on file. You can absolutely reset your PIN when you have access to Vega Discover, but to start out, the PIN will be your last four phone number digits. Another small change for patrons who are signed up to receive text message notifications for holds pickup - you will need to re-opt-in to receiving text messages. You will get a text on December 12 confirming that you'd still like to receive texts from us.

If you are a person with multiple barcodes associated with your account (meaning you have multiple library cards on file,) the new system will only let us transfer one over. If you're having trouble accessing your accounts after we switch over, please reach out to our Technology Coordination at louise.alcorn@wdm.iowa.gov or call 515-222-3573.

Q: How can I learn to use Vega Discover “like a pro”?
A: The library offers assistance in a few ways:

  • Connect with a library worker to get more hands-on tips and tricks on how to use the system. Email us with specific questions at library@wdm.iowa.gov or give us a call at 515-222-3403.

Q: What is the timeline for the switch?

A: Below is the timeline:

November 10 – Due dates for checked-out materials will extend to December 17.

November 26 – Our 24-Hour Kiosk in Valley Junction will be emptied for the switch-over.

November 30 at 12 PM – Last chance to place holds in our old Encore system before the switch.

December 1–11 –

  • Checkouts will be available at the main desk only (self checks will be down during this time).

  • New holds will be paused during this period, but you'll still be able to pick up items you've placed on hold before November 30.

  • We will not be making new library cards during this time.

  • There may be a delay in processing new December releases.

  • Our mobile app will be unavailable during this time period - but a new one will be coming on the 12th!

  • All of our online databases will still be accessible during this time!

  • Help us out by keeping your materials during this timeframe - we won't be able to check the items back in, anyway!

December 11 – The library will be closed for system updates.

December 12 – We’ll reopen with our brand-new catalog system, Vega Discover! Stop on in, complete a scavenger hunt in our new system, and win a cool prize (while supplies last!)
