Program Description

Event Details

This month, we invite you to step into the delightfully dark and whimsical world of Edward Gorey, the master of Victorian-inspired absurdity and gothic humor. Best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations and morbidly funny tales, Gorey created a body of work that blurs the line between children’s literature and adult satire.

We will learn about and explore Gorey’s life, influences, and distinctive artistic style and share our thoughts on his most iconic works, including The Gashlycrumb Tinies, The Doubtful Guest, and other “children’s” stories with a twist. We encourage you to bring and share your favorite Gorey illustrations and passages, and enjoy a bit of darkly humorous discussion.

Inner Child is the book club for grown-ups who refuse to grow up! We will indulge in the fantastical and mysterious magic of children’s books, exploring what makes them so powerful and memorable. Each month we will look at the works of an author, an illustrator or a genre of children’s literature, from picture books to children’s fantasy.

As we reflect on the books that mattered to us most, we will discover how they read differently now, and how we have experienced them the children in our lives. Bring your memories, and bring your imagination!
